Since 1967, members of Chuckanut District, inspired by member, Cora Zoberst, worked on a vision: the Fragrance Garden for the Blind. On Sept. 27, 1973, the Garden was dedicated at Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon. It was later abandoned by the Mount Vernon Park Department. Finally, the Fragrance Garden for the Blind and Handicapped (it is wheelchair accessible) was re-created and dedicated on June 26, 1987, located at Tennant Lake Interpretive Center, Hovander Park, in Ferndale, WA. Chuckanut District Director Maribeth Erickson was present.
Chuckanut District of WSFGC established the Fragrance Garden Endowment Fund, managed by Whatcom Foundation to benefit and contribute to the maintenance of the Fragrance Garden. The principal provided by Chuckanut District members generates the interest of $1,000 annually to fund needs of the garden. It was specifically designed for the visually impaired although the garden is enjoyed by all who visit. Included are level walkways, raised planting beds, handrails with Braille identification labels, benches and a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees known for their fragrances for visitors to touch and smell.
The Fragrance Garden has received awards from the International Northwest Parks and Recreation Assn. and from the State of Washington Landscape Architects for its design and public support. The Garden has been featured in Sunset Magazine.
